Rajyasabha seat is not just a honorary position

Sachin and rekha to become rajyasabha MPs. Are they so great? Yes, they are great. So do they deserve to be Rajyasabha MPs? No, because MP seat is not a honorary thing like Padmasri or Bharata ratna. Already govt agreed to include sports as a category to get India's highest civilian award, when sachin is struggling to make the 100th century. Let him have two Bharatha Ratnas, but why a seat in parliament?

Many  think that Rajyasabha is powerless and it's for the able ministers who can't woo voters but have wisdom in a particular area like Manmohan Singh or arun jaitly. Of course, it should be powerless, or else it would be called rule of the elite class, not democracy. Then what is the purpose of such a house in democracy?

From the very first time the idea of democracy was born, political thinkers are bugged with one flaw of people in general, i.e. humans are emotional .  There is a fat chance ( not normal fat, sumo-fat ) that, the voters will fall for the magic of speaker and elect him like in the case of lalu prasad. let's say voters are at their right mind when they elected the policy makers, but even policy makers are humans. They could commit errors in policy making in an emotional state, which will be fatal for the nation. To prevent such things, political thinkers came up with the idea of senate, which in Latin roughly means house of old or wisdom.

The job of these old guys is to create check point when the elected house, made an error in making a decision due to various reasons. That's it, only check points or warning or suggestion or to make the actual house to rethink it's decision.  But if the elected house is stubborn, it's word should be the last word, to make sure that, our loksabha is twice as large as Rajyasabha, so if both houses are at loggerheads, Loksabha prevails, after all its elected by the people !!

Now, to the actual question, can sachin or rekha can take up such a job? His batting performance dropped when captaincy was given to him, he requested govt of India to exempt import tax on his Ferrari because he played well many times and gave success to India. He never really expressed his opinions on match fixing or IPL scams. I am not against sachin, my point is, runs made on the cricket field does not make a person to sit in the house and scrutinize govt policies. If govt wants to honor him for his service to the nation, give him more awards, or create an award on his name and give it to crickets, like Dadasaheb phalke award, or offer him free petrol for his family for rest of the life.

And Rekha? Who's idea it is to send her to Rajyasabha? I would choose vivek oberai, he at least went to tsunami hit villages and served there for few days.

My point is, sending a person to the Rajyasabha is not like giving him a bank job where he gets the salary but never really works, or like giving him an honorary captain position in armed forces where he only ware the uniform to have photographs but never enters the war field.

Thanks for making sense about Rajyasabha in particular.
Yes!! nowadays "Nominated post" is like a compliment to the person who supports the party under critical situations for Ex: Adikeshavulu was supported INC and granted a presidant post in Tirupathi devasthanam "Rajyasabha--upper house of the Parliament of India" needs educated people in respective fields.
"I would choose vivek oberai" My friend.. we the people of INDIA can elect(choose) the people only in elections but not after elections ;)

In AP also YSR reopened sasana mandali for complimentary to the party workers..

Coming to you point Sachin and Rekha both are in their respective fields.., I'm not sure about rekha and Sachin is good at his job. Better to be there for sometime as a cricket fan i can't say much.
If it is true that sachin also becoming MP. will watch his political speech in Parliament.. ;)

12 out of 250 are chosen by the President of India for their expertise in specific fields of art, literature, science, and social services

Sachin is one of the 12 members whom are choosen by the Presidant??? @Sanjiv

I 100% agree with the content posted. You and your supporters in the domain of 20 out of the scale of 100 and other 80 including political people (so called fans of cricket- Not the fans of the common people)naturally are in the mad race to vote for Bharat Ratna to him. And I endorse the opinion of justice Mr.Katju who was dead against con firing such big awards to dwarfs. Thanks for thinking pro-democracy in the nominations rather than pro-star culture. Keep it up and I hope one day this argument holds good in the days to come.

@Sanjeev, Dont write with half knowledge..

you have an absurd argument reg. his ferrari tax waiver request. Remember, He did not purchased the car. He got it as a gift or award for his contribution. India has a 100% tax on imported vehicles. But here sachin did not PURCHASED it out of interest but received as a gift. Who would like to pay 1 crore tax on something that they did not purchased.. That is why he requested for tax exemption. He might have lot of imported products in his house which he purchased and paid tax over those. When the whole issue made controversy by the media, Ferrari came forward and paid the tax on it to gift it to Sachin..

>> I would choose vivek oberai

Oh.. the same vivek oberai fined for public smoking.. so u choose law breakers?

ooh good, my frnd wants to "gift" me a MacBook and i shall ask govt not to collect tax because its a gift.

coming to vivek oberai, a guy went to tsunami affected area, tried to explain the situation over there even at filmfare awards, adopted a village to make it better and smoked in public, so he is good or bad?

One bad deed wont negate a good one and vice versa , i agree sachin is a great player, i am not so much of a cricket fan but liked the title of the book "if cricket is religion then sachin is god" , its understandable to give him the honor home ministry included sports for bharata ratna. I am glad govt did that, if bhimsen joshi could get bharata ratna then why not sachin?

But now think about it, he went all the way to sonia gandhi home to to discuss the RS nomination, he accepted it gladly but could not find time to take oath so far. And announced that cricket is his first priority not politics, it looks like he delayed taking oath till the IPL season ended to prove what he has stated. Thats all i got to say.

Well, The gift was given in the honor when he equalled Don Bradman's 29 centuries record. If you can achieve something like that, I will pay for your MacBook if not ferrari :)

So many people contributed to tsunami or flood victims includes few of the uneducated in my village. So, can all of them be nominated to rajyasabha?

One bad deed wont negate a good one and vice versa

just Not only applies to Vivek Oberoi..

>> it looks like he delayed taking oath till the IPL season ended to prove what he has stated.

That is how you want to see.. but how u see is not always how the truth is.. How much time that it takes to travel for him to Delhi in morning flight and take oath and return by evening.. Does he given up any of his political responsibility in this one month delay (as u feel) to give space for his personal priorities?

I hope people have sane thinking rather simply find faults for the heck of doing it.. That is all I wish to say..

Thanks for the offer satya garu...may be apple company will pay the import duty on ur gift ;)

"just Not only applies to Vivek Oberoi.." thats exactly i was trying to say....we need to check both sides of a coin. As you have said, he could have traveled in the morning flight to delhi, take oath and come back. But he didnt do it so far. And according to parliamentary procedures, a MP who has not taken oath is not allowed to vote in parliament. When he accepted the nomination of RS, it is his political responsibility to attend when there is a session going on , discuss the issues and vote. He didnt do it so far.

He is the man with integrity and always played his best for the nation. I remember the time he came to because of death of his father and went back to continue playing for world cup. i respect him for that.

For the record, i dont have any personal vendetta against sachin. He is a legend in cricket. But my point is, expertise in one field dont prove that a person is expert in every field. He is a very good batsman and that didnt made him a good captain. Every field is different, and when a person willingly entering a new field, he has to play by the rules of that till he learns the ropes , if he is not so keen, then whats the point?

satya said...

As far as I know, He was officially nominated on 27th April.. And any voting that is going to be takes place will be intimated before the sessions.. And I am sure, He knows the importance of attending a session better than you and I..

All my point is you are trying to make mountain out of mole hill. without even seeing for even one session you are jumping to conclusions that he is not a worthy selection.. Have Patience..

@Sanju, @Satya:

Customs duty is leviable on a "ad valorem" basis irrespective of whether it is a sale, gift or whatever.

Exemption from customs duty is permitted only against an applicable customs notification. To my knowledge there is no blanket waiver notification for any achievements.

If Viswanathan Anand gets a Lamborghini as an award, he will have to pay duty on that too.

@Jai, But wiki (though not reliable) says other way.. Tax waiver is applicable if an automobile is received as prize..
